Four Dedham High School seniors were awarded $1,000 scholarships by the Club toward college expenses in Fall 2016.  They are:  Jacob Farnham, Christopher Olliney, Olivia Kane, and Ariana Barletta. All students have superior academic records and spent many months doing community service.  These scholarships are awarded each year, and new applications are available in March 2017 in the guidance department of  Dedham High School.   Dedham residents who attend Catholic Memorial, Noble and Grenough, Ursaline Academy, and Xaverian Brothers are also eligible to apply.  Dedham Rotary Club wishes all scholarship recipients the best in their future studies.

On Sunday, May 1, 2016 at 11 am, Samantha and Rotarian Jeannine Latham will visit and "read" at the Blue Bunny Bookstore in Dedham, MA.  Samantha is a very friendly black Lab who is in training with Jeannine to live with, and assist, a disabled child or veteran when her training is completed.  Jeannine has been working with Samantha for over one year each weekend to expose her to a variety of environments, situations, and experiences.  While at the Blue Bunny, Samantha will demonstrate how an assist dog can help its owner, while stories are being read to the children.  Come out to meet Samantha and bring your camera!

On March 23, 2016, the Dedham Rotary Club delivered 100 floral arrangements to the residents of Traditions, 735 Washington Street, Dedham, to celebrate Spring's entrance.  Lillian Delmonico, Executive Director at Traditions, welcomed the Club to set up blue iris and baby breath in vases, tied with yellow and blue ribbons, Rotary's signature colors.  None of the residents were given advance notice of the delivery, and all were pleasantly surprised to receive their floral gift.  Rotarians met with them, while in the main dining room, enjoying lunch.  New friendships were formed, and Club members were happy to once again put smiles on the faces of our local senior citizens.

Each spring, the Dedham Rotary Club chooses a new facility to deliver flowers to its residents.  Last year, it was Emeritus, now Brookdale, in Dedham.  The Dedham Rotary Club is committed to serving its senior citizens, and is grateful for the many contributions they have made to our community over the years.

For the past five years, the Dedham Rotary Club has been fortunate to hold its annual fundraiser, TASTE DEDHAM, at Moseley's On The Charles.  Fortunate, too, to have its proprietor, Eddie DiVincenzo, as a long-time, dedicated Rotarian.  Finding a venue large enough to hold 500+ "Tasters" and 30 restaurants was no easy feat for the Club when the first fundraiser was held.  Eddie immediately stepped up to the plate, however, offering Moseley's for the entire evening's event five years ago, and it's been held there ever since.  Eddie's motto is reflected in Rotary's:  "Service Above Self".

Local Restaurants that will participate in the fundraiser are:  Aquitaine Bistro, Brickhouse Cafe, Corrib Pub & Restaurant, Diana's Fine Catering, Edible Arrangements, Halfway Cafe, Harrow's Chicken, Heirloom Kitchen, Himalayan Bistro, Isabella Restaurant, Kennedy's Public House, Kings Bowl Dedham, P.F. Chang's China Bistro, Roche Bros., Salem Food Market, Showcase Cinema Legacy Place, Uno's Dedham, Victory Grille, Vincenzo's Italian Specialty Store & Deli, Whole Foods Market, and Yard House.

Dedham Rotary is very grateful for our Diamond Sponsors to help make this a successful fundraiser:  Blue Hills Bank, Dedham Savings, and Needham Bank.

The Dedham Rotary Club recently donated ten $20.00 gift cards to Veterans living at Huntington House at the Veterans Administration Facility in Jamaica Plain, MA.  Veterans from out-of-town needing rehab and treatment can overnight at Huntington House, thereby eliminating the need for an expensive hotel room.  It is difficult for Veterans to prepare meals while receiving treatment, however, so the Club donated gift cards for food redeemable at the Real Deal Deli in Jamaica Plain, close to Huntington House.  Rotarian Jeannine Lathum presented the gift cards to Kevin Forest, Director of the V.A. Facility in West Roxbury, MA.  Mr. Forest has been a featured speaker at the Dedham Rotary Club, and helped raise awareness of the difficulty that Veterans face when needing rehabilitation and medical treatment.

You may have seen them around town:  a statuesque woman with red, white and blue sunglasses, tethered to a 3-month old black female Lab.  Rotarian Jeannine Lathum volunteers her weekends to train "Samantha" for life as an "Assist Dog", to be later matched with a disabled Veteran, an autistic, or handicapped individual after training.  NEADS (National Education for Assistance Dog Services) provides the dog for training and works with volunteers who wish to contribute their time and services.  For the intensive 14-month training, Samantha spends her weekdays at the MCI Concord Penitentiary where an inmate trains her.  Samantha sleeps with this individual at night.  Jeannine states that this person has done an outstanding job in training the pup.  On Friday afternoon, however, Jeannine picks Samantha up from MCI for weekend living and training in her home until Sunday afternoon.  That's when local residents get to meet them -- walking through Dedham Center, maybe sitting inside Mocha Java, visiting the Dedham Library, or a place of worship.  Jeannine attests to Samantha's high intelligence, obedience, and that she is quick to learn.  Samantha is also lovable, friendly, and responds positively to those who wish to pat her.

Four Dedham High School students have been chosen to attend Rotary's Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) weekend on June 27-28, 2015 at Worcester State University.  Selected based on their high academic achievement are students:  Samantha Letsche, Margaret Downing, Kaitlyn Naddaff, and Faith Koroma-Cohen.  For two days the students will participate in leadership training programs and activities.  Many other Rotary Clubs throughout Area 7910 in Massachusetts also participate, and the students do not know each other before the start of the program. No cell phones are permitted for the weekend, except in emergency situations.  Dedham Rotarians Carmen Nazario and Yovanny Arias have escorted and worked with the students in this program for several years, and will do so again this year.  Carmen states that it's difficult for the students to get used to the "no-cell phone" policy, and encourages students to more direct, one-on-one communication with each other.  However, by the time the weekend is at a close, the students rarely miss their phones; instead, they are tearfully bidding goodbye to their newfound friends.

Seventy-five residents at the Emeritus senior living facility in Dedham were gifted with fresh spring bouquets from the Rotary Club recently. Linda Proulx, Facilities Director at Emeritus, greeted the Rotarians in the reception area and set up a work table from which flowers and vases were arranged.  Each resident in the reception and dining areas received a floral gift.
Meg Smith, an experienced horticulturist and Rotarian Jeannine Lathum, were instrumental in obtaining the iris and almond flower arrangements, their blue and yellow colors matching the bows on the vases and Rotary International's wheel.  Smith will also give a presentation entitled "Down to Earth" at the April 30 Rotary luncheon meeting.

It isn’t often that the Dedham Rotary Club has a 4-legged guest at its weekly meeting. Rainbow, a disabled assistance black Lab, and John Moon, his owner, were invited to bring awareness to the vital work that assistance dogs do in our communities. These dogs work with autistic, hearing-impaired, and disabled veterans, and undergo a vigorous training program to make sure they are suitable for a human partner.
